Pinball FAQ & Terms
New to pinball? Trying to understand what makes these machines tick? This FAQ covers pinball terms, parts of a pinball machine, game features, and everything you need to know before stepping up to the flippers at The Getaway.
What are the main parts of a pinball machine?
The playfield is the sloped surface where the ball rolls. The flippers are the levers you control to keep the ball in play. The plunger launches the ball onto the playfield. Bumpers, slingshots, targets, ramps, and holes create scoring opportunities and hazards.
What is the difference between passive and active bumpers?
Passive bumpers simply register a hit and score points. Active bumpers (also called pop bumpers or jet bumpers) kick the ball away when hit, adding speed and unpredictability.
What does "tilt" mean?
A tilt is a penalty for moving the machine too much. Modern machines allow small, controlled nudges, but excessive shaking or lifting triggers the tilt sensor and ends your ball or game.
What is a skill shot?
A skill shot is a deliberate opening shot that awards bonus points or starts a mode if you hit a specific target or lane right after plunging the ball.
What is multiball?
Multiball is a mode where two or more balls are in play at once. It creates high-scoring opportunities and is often tied to the game's most exciting rulesets.
What are drop targets?
Drop targets are targets that drop below the playfield when hit. Clearing a full bank usually awards big points or starts a mode.
What are ramps and loops?
Ramps are raised plastic or metal paths that guide the ball safely back to the flippers. Loops are full or partial orbits around the playfield that often build combos and jackpots.
What is a bash toy?
A bash toy is a physical figure or object on the playfield that reacts when hit. It's usually tied to the machine's theme and a key objective.
Can anyone enter a pinball tournament?
Yes! Our pinball tournaments welcome beginners, casual players, and serious competitors. We explain the format before each event and pair players fairly.
Do you serve alcohol?
Yes. The Getaway offers a choice selection of beer and wine for guests 21 and older. Valid ID is required.
